The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced on August 5, 2026, that a resident of Northern Virginia had been diagnosed with dengue virus infection. How Dengue Spreads
Dengue is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes are active during the day, with peak biting times in the early morning and late afternoon. When an Aedes mosquito bites a person who is infected with the dengue virus, it picks up the virus. About four to ten days later, when the mosquito bites another person, it can transmit the virus to that individual.
The virus itself does not spread directly from person to person. The cycle of transmission relies entirely on the mosquito vector. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is particularly efficient at transmitting dengue because it prefers to live in close proximity to humans, often breeding in artificial containers filled with water found in and around homes, such as flower pots, buckets, and discarded tires. The Aedes albopictus, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, is more adaptable to cooler climates and has been expanding its range across the U.S.
Who Is Affected and How
Individuals living in or traveling to areas with Aedes mosquito populations are at risk of contracting dengue. Symptoms of dengue fever, often referred to as "breakbone fever" due to the severe joint and muscle pain it can cause, typically appear four to ten days after the infected mosquito bite. These symptoms can include high fever, severe headache (often behind the eyes), nausea, vomiting, rash, and joint and muscle pain.
While most dengue infections cause mild to moderate illness, a small percentage can develop into severe dengue, which can be life-threatening. Severe dengue can lead to plasma leakage, respiratory distress, severe bleeding, and organ impairment. The VDH is advising residents in Northern Virginia to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, and emptying standing water from containers around their homes.
