Invasive mold infections, a potentially deadly but underappreciated health risk, may be more common than previously thought, a new U.S. study suggests. Researchers detected approximately 450 cases in Atlanta-area hospitals over a five-year period, with about one-third of those patients succumbing to the illness during their hospital stay. The findings, published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), highlight a significant gap in public health awareness and surveillance, as these infections are not currently a mandated reportable illness.

The study, conducted between 2020 and 2024 across four Atlanta-area hospitals and their affiliated outpatient clinics, aimed to provide a localized estimate of invasive mold disease prevalence. Initially identifying nearly 1,000 potential cases, the research team refined the count to 450 confirmed cases after excluding individuals who showed signs of exposure but did not meet the criteria for invasive mold disease. This rigorous approach yielded an estimate that hospitals could expect to see between 3 to 5 cases per year for every 100 inpatient beds, with higher rates observed in larger academic medical centers that typically manage more complex patient conditions.

Most patients identified in the study had compromised immune systems, with a notable number experiencing weakened immunity following COVID-19 infections. Invasive mold diseases are caused by specific fungal species, with spores typically inhaled but also capable of entering the body through wounds or contaminated medical equipment. While harmless to the general population, these infections can be life-threatening for vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, cancer patients, and those with other conditions that impair their immune defenses.

Dr. Jeremy Gold, the study's senior author and a CDC researcher, emphasized the novelty of these findings, stating it is "kind of the first time we've had an estimate like this." He further underscored the growing importance of understanding this threat, particularly in light of climate change. Researchers have observed a recurring pattern of increased mold exposure following natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods, which are projected to become more frequent and intense due to a changing climate. This environmental factor, combined with a growing population of older individuals who are inherently more susceptible to infections, points to a potential rise in fungal disease incidence.

Dr. Jeffrey Jenks, an infectious disease researcher at Duke University, corroborated the concerns about climate change, agreeing that "the frequency of fungal infections will likely increase with climate change." He described the CDC study's findings as "valuable" but also expressed a desire for broader data, suggesting that "seeing results from similar studies done in different parts of the United States would be helpful" to establish a more comprehensive national picture.

Previous national estimates from CDC researchers had suggested that more than 15,000 hospitalizations annually might be linked to invasive mold disease. However, the current study's localized approach offers a more granular insight into hospital-level case management. While the Atlanta findings offer a crucial baseline, Dr. Gold cautioned against generalizing the exact figures to other regions, acknowledging that mold prevalence can vary significantly across the country. Nevertheless, the study provides hospital administrators with a critical tool to assess whether their observed case numbers align with expected rates or might indicate a localized outbreak.

The study did not investigate the specific locations where patients acquired their infections, leaving open the possibility of exposure occurring both within healthcare facilities and in the community. The implications of these findings extend beyond immediate patient care, prompting a need for enhanced public health strategies to address mold-related illnesses, particularly in the context of increasing environmental vulnerabilities and an aging population.
